The Ugly Stepsister Strikes Back

Review: The Ugly Stepsister Strikes Back - Sariah Wilson- August 2012

The Ugly Stepsister strikes back centres on Matilda Lowe, an 18 year old Goth /wallflower.  Mattie is overshadowed by her beautiful, talented, popular, stepsister Ella; the complete antithesis of Mattie and is desperately in love with Ella’s heartthrob boyfriend Jake Kingston.   Seeking refuge in her sketching, Mattie’s life has been far from perfect and having Ella as a stepsister seems only to magnify her problems.   When she gets a detention from a teacher for expressing a negative opinion about the said teacher’s favourite author, she finds herself alone with Jake.  After a heated exchange with him for not allowing him to skip detention, Mattie is devastated and confesses to Ella her feelings for Jake.  What follows shakes her very core as Ella reveals that she is not in love with him but only dated him because everyone expected her too. She agrees to dump him following his treatment of Mattie and knowing her feelings for him.   Fueled by this Mattie hatches a plan to “take something away from him” as he is the proverbial golden boy and life comes too easy for him.  She hears that he is running for senior class president and in retribution, the ugly stepsister decides to strike back and put herself in the running too, to knock him off the top spot.    But will Mattie win or will her feelings for Jake overshadow her?

I enjoyed this book. It was light and easy to read.  Mattie was an endearing heroine and the book was well written.  It was by turns a love story but also a coming of age tale full of teenage angst, as Mattie is forced to confront issues from her home life and also feelings of inadequacy due to her stepsister.    It reminded me of a modern day Cinderella tale and like the story; Mattie undergoes a transformation in pursuit of her handsome prince.    The story was well structured and played out with an array of colourful characters.
