Review: One Shot - E.L George
Review: One Shot - E.L George - April 2019
I know it may seem dark, but one of the topics I have always been
fascinated with books is that of school shootings. I guess it's because here in
New Zealand it's not a common issue we have, unlike the States. Here in New
Zealand, we turn on our computers and are confronted with the news of mass
shootings via Facebook, just yesterday we heard about the shooting at Virginia
Beach Hall with twelve dead. This book itself was released in April during the
20th anniversary of Columbine school shooting. One of the biggest that caused
an impact in American History. I remember the day that particular one happened
as I was 12 years old at the time. That following year for my 13th birthday I received
the book Rachel's Tears based on the diaries of one of the girls murdered
Rachel Scott. One Shot by E.L George is a quick read which contains perspectives
from three different people. We have the two shooters - one who is shooting for
revenge at those who bullied him and the other because he has a vendetta and is
angry and wants to kill and then one of the victims on how she could have
helped. This book reminds us that sometimes you only have one chance to save or
try and change the world. It can be something so simple as being kind to
one another and saying a compliment to the person next to you or inviting them
into your clique and making them feel included. As someone who was bullied and
at certain times still feel that way in the workplace, stories like this touch
something in me, and it shows how one word or gesture could change the entire
situation.
