VBT# The Roommate Subtext - Ella Winters

Image
Review: The Roommate Subtest - Elia Winters - September 2026 I'll be honest with you, dear reader: there was a moment, somewhere in the middle of this book, where I set it down on the arm of the couch and genuinely considered not picking it back up. That's not a great sign for a review, I know. But stick with me, because something pulled me back in, and I think it's worth talking about why. The Roommate Subtext gives us Maggie St. Claire, a freelance journalist who's perfectly content admiring her roommate Blake from a respectable distance,  hot, nerdy, surrounded by an absurd jungle of houseplants he clearly loves more than is reasonable. It's cozy. It's domestic. It's the kind of set-up that makes you want to put the kettle on. Then Maggie lands an assignment to expose an anonymous online kinkster called The Scarlet Pimpernel, and suddenly sitting across the breakfast table from sweet, wholesome Blake gets a lot more complicated. Because Blake, botanist ...

Review: Kissing Tolstoy - Penny Reid

Review: Kissing Tolstoy - Book #1 Dear Professor - Penny Reid - May 2014 Penny Reid is one of my all-time favourite authors, especially when it comes to quirky, geeky, nerdy characters and what I like to call Geek Chic Lit. Her characters always seem to speak directly to my heart because, more often than not, I can see a little bit of myself in them. The overthinking, the awkwardness, the love of books and knowledge… yep, Penny Reid gets me! Kissing Tolstoy had actually been sitting patiently on my Kindle since its release, and I honestly cannot believe it took me this long to finally read it. LOL! But, as they say, better late than never, and I am so glad I eventually picked it up. Imagine going on a blind date with a ridiculously attractive man, only to discover months later that your super-hot mystery date is now your Russian Literature professor. What do you do? Well, if you're anything like Anna , you overthink absolutely everything, panic internally, and pray for a swift end...

Review: Give Me Butterflies - Jillian Meadows

Review: Give Me Butterflies - Book #1 The Oaks Sisters - Jillian Meadows - July 2023 I had been holding out to read this book and was so excited as it had given me vibes of one of my favorite series by Erin Mallon - The Natural History Museum series. Give Me Butterflies is also set in a museum and we have Millie Oaks who is an Entomologist and Finn who is an Astronomer. The only difference between the two series is that Give Me Butterflies is a bit more serious and touches on a few edgier topics compared to the hilarious LOL moments that are sprinkled right through Erin Mallon's series. Besides that, these were very similar and I feel that reading Erin's work first actually in a way set me up to love Jillian Meadow's book just as much. In Give Me Butterflies, Millie is up for a promotion as director of Entomology but the thing is that the other person also up for the position happens to be her awful ex-boyfriend Kyle who is an arse and gaslit and mentally abused her. The t...

Review: Bookworm - Katana Collins

Review: Bookworm - Katana Collins - May 2024 As a fellow bookworm, this cover and book caught my attention, books about books are my jam. Bookworm by Katana Collins begins with Harper and Adam as high school sweethearts and the pair of them losing their v-card. That night though, which should have been the height of their relationship was also the worst as that night the pair of them also broke up. Adam went to Dartmouth to study and Harper ended up at Oxford University. Now seven years later, the pair of them are back in the same place at Dartmouth as Harper has been hired to restore some rare books after a small fire broke out in their rare book room. We can see the sparks still fly between Adam and Harper and of course, we can see how things end up. The thing though is that there is someone beautiful and approved by Adam's father Elijah vying for Adam's attention. Can Harper and Adam work out their history and move forward together? This book was exciting as I would have lov...

Review: Love in the Stacks - Book #5 Love in New Bedford - Delilah Peters - October 2019 On Saturday last week, I ended up in the hospital and while waiting decided to click into something random on my Kindle, so I got my partner to pick a page number and a book number and it landed on Love in the Stacks by Delilah Peters. This was part of The Dirty Bits/ Love in New Bedford series published by Carina Press. This book also helps with being a Christmas in July-themed read as it is set at Christmas between two library workers. Ben and Poppy, this Christmas are going to both brave up and talk to one another and who knows what hijinks they might get up to between the stacks, especially after one Christmas Party that leaves Ben and Poppy stranded and stuck in the library overnight together. As a former librarian and a lover of books, I loved this read as it highlighted a few of my favorite things from librarians, quirky characters, love of Christmas, book recommendations, and romance betwee...

Review: Love Theoretically - Ali Hazelwood ( Book#3)

Review: Love Theoretically - Book #3 Love Hypothesis Series - Ali Hazelwood - June 2023 Something that readers of my reviews will know is that I love quirky and geeky characters as I feel often I can relate to them. I might not be as academic as they are but I can be just as dense or awkward. I have loved this series and I do feel that as each book came along, they just got better and better. In Love, Theoretically, it's the world of Theoretical Physicists versus Experimental Physicists with Elsie and Jack. To help pay her way through graduate school, she joined a fake dating site where she pretended to be a fake girlfriend, and one of her clients was Greg Smith. She meets Greg's family and his awful brother who she feels is always judging her. The next thing she knows in her personal life is she is up for a dream job at MIT and one of the guys though is her nemesis who discredited her mentor Jonathon Turner-Smith but turns out Elsie knows Jonathon as Jack and he knows Elsie...
