Review: Venomous - Book #2 Monstrous Series - Nicole M. Rubino - October 2024 Some books sit on your Kindle for years before the right moment finally comes along to read them. Venomous by Nicole M. Rubino was one of those books for me. I’d had this one sitting on my Kindle for a couple of years, but it was an August reading challenge that finally gave me the push I needed. One of the prompts was for a mythology retelling, and I immediately knew this was going to be the perfect choice. Sometimes a reading challenge really does know what you need to pick up next! After surviving her first year at Alystair University, Rhiannon is barely holding things together. She is plagued by nightmares that blur the boundaries between dreams and reality, while the guilt of the friends she failed to protect continues to weigh heavily on her. Then there is Nick. Believing that letting him go was the only way to keep him safe, Rhiannon soon discovers that her plan has spectacularly backfired as Nick’s o...

Review: Divine Dicks and Mortal Pricks - Walburga Appleseed - January 2024 You know those cozy evenings when you're curled up with a cuppa, and you want something that's both clever and entertaining? Well, I found exactly that in Walburga Appleseed's delightfully irreverent romp through Greek mythology. This isn't your dusty school textbook version of these ancient tales. Appleseed has taken the familiar stories we all half-remember – you know, the ones where Zeus couldn't keep it in his toga and everyone seemed to be related to everyone else – and flipped them on their head. Finally, someone's asking the questions that should have been asked millennia ago: Was Achilles really that heroic? And why on earth did the Trojan War start over what was essentially a cosmic temper tantrum? What I absolutely loved about this book is how it centers the women who've been lurking in the margins of these stories for ages. The goddesses dealing with their philandering hu...

Review: Hades and Persephone - Lee Savino and Stasia Black - July 2024 One of my favorite Greek myths is the story of Hades and Persephone as in a way it sort of resembles my own love story, as a Christian sheltered girl fell in love with a guy that was dark and mysterious and gothic. He was like my Hades and I was his Persephone. However, unlike this tale which was a dark romance, mine wasn't as terrible. In this book Persephone has escaped home and gotten a job in the city as a Nanny and life has been going great, that is until one night everything falls apart as she is hit on by her boss Paul, loses her job, and then a random guy tries to drug and kidnap her. After this ordeal, she meets Hades and he becomes her savior and the "perfect gentleman". Their relationship is a whirlwind one as he makes her feel like a princess and that he truly loves and adores her.  When he asks her to marry him, she accepts as she loves him with all her heart and believes he does the same....

Review: Electric Idol - Book #2 Dark Olympus Series - Katee Robert - January 2022 This particular series has been on my list to read for a couple of years as I do enjoy stories based around the gods and goddesses and mostly Greek history. I even studied as part of my degree in Humanities. This series is a darker side of the Gods and Goddesses and thinking about it probably the closest as we have read that most of them weren't nice people especially those in the inner circles who held most of the power. In Electric Idol, the start is a party where women are introduced and paraded around the new Zeus aka the former Perseus as he needs a new bride and that female will become the new Hera. In Dark Olympus, we learn some of the roles are inherited and others are born into. Demeter is showing off her daughter Psyche as a potential bride for Zeus. Psyche isn't interested and would rather be in the shadows. I also loved her character, she was a favorite of mine and one that I felt I co...
