Review: The Usual Silence - Jenny Milchman

Review: The Usual Silence - Book #1 Arles Shepherd Thriller - Jenny Milchman - October 2024 I was excited to read this one as it sounded interesting and overall the book was a good thriller, but I did feel that it had a bit too many storylines and along the way, the story for me started to get muddled and confusing. It gave me the same vibes of Family of Liars by E.Lockhart where you enjoy the book, but you are still left with that feeling of what I read as I sat here afterward trying to process and wrap my head around the book. The book starts with a young girl kidnapped and then it jumps to a therapist named Arles Shepherd whose therapy skills are seen as out of the box she gets a few complaints and the board decide to let her go. She then inherits her family's old house to open it as a residential therapy. There she invites Louise and her son. Arles has been searching for the identity of Louise as she has had in her possession for the past 20+ years a photo of a young girl. The ...

Review: Unsteady - Peyton Corrine

Review: Unsteady - Peyton Corinne - April 2024 This book was provided to me by HarperCollins NZ and I had been looking forward to reading it as recently I have gone back into the world of Hockey Romances. This is mainly due to that being the current trend of romances lately. A group of friends on Instagram were doing a buddy read of Unsteady, so that motivated me even more to pick it up. Here I was expecting another semi-light-hearted hockey romance like Well Played and Truly Pucked or From Puck to F##k. What I got was more along the lines of Icebreaker and Sweet Collide. In Unsteady, we have our hockey champion Rhys who is currently suffering panic attacks and trying to work up the courage to get back on the ice after he suffered a really bad concussion at a game. After the concussion, every time he saw the ice or went to step on it - the panic arose and he just couldn't do it. Our female main character Sadie is an ice skater and she is trying to balance a life of ice skating and ...

Review: Silence For the Dead - Simone St James

Review: Silence For The Dead - Simone St. James - April 2014 One of my reading goals for 2024 is to get through the author Simone St. James booklists, so far I have read one of her books and the other was a DNF. Silence for the Dead is the 3rd book by this author I have read and the second one I have enjoyed. I was surprised though that when I started this book I was transported back to the year 1919-1920 - just after The Great War  had ended and during the second wind of the influenza plague. As we know the first one started ravaging families in 1918. The book starts with a young female called Kitty off to work at a Mental Institution, the institution is housed in an old family home that once belonged to a wealthy family who one day vanished without a trace. Strange things are happening inside the walls though as at night, the patients are hearing voices and hallucinating. They are convinced it's part of their PTSD and illnesses but the truth is that bad terrible things happened...

Review: Someone to Kiss My Scars - Brooke Skipstone - October 2019 Needing a book to read before bed, I was scrolling and clicked on this book. I was going in blind as I didn't know what this one was about or could remember. I had previously read one of this author's books before that was a little odd, so had expected maybe something similar. The book starts with Hunter who can't seem to remember anything from his past, but lately, he has been having strong visions of people's stories and they all feature around sex whether it be a shame, abuse, or romance. As the book goes along, his best friend Jazz - will do some scientific experiments around memories and learn that Hunter is seeing the bad memories and those deep in the mind that are causing pain. In doing so though will this help Hunter unlock his memories and with Jazz by his side, will he be strong enough to relive the trauma he has tried to block or will it be another repeat that will cause more scars? Find o...
