Review: Unsteady - Peyton Corrine

Review: Unsteady - Peyton Corinne - April 2024

This book was provided to me by HarperCollins NZ and I had been looking forward to reading it as recently I have gone back into the world of Hockey Romances. This is mainly due to that being the current trend of romances lately. A group of friends on Instagram were doing a
buddy read of Unsteady, so that motivated me even more to pick it up. Here I was expecting another semi-light-hearted hockey romance like Well Played and Truly Pucked or From Puck to F##k. What I got was more along the lines of Icebreaker and Sweet Collide. In Unsteady, we have our hockey champion Rhys who is currently suffering panic attacks and trying to work up the courage to get back on the ice after he suffered a really bad concussion at a game. After the concussion, every time he saw the ice or went to step on it - the panic arose and he just couldn't do it. Our female main character Sadie is an ice skater and she is trying to balance a life of ice skating and keeping her family afloat as she comes from a rough house where she is pulling a Fiona from Shameless and looking after her drunk father and two younger siblings. When Sadie witnesses Rhys having a panic attack, she comes to the rescue and helps him and throughout the book, the two have chemistry sparks. Sadie though has her walls up and won't let Rhys in. I loved the side characters I think in this book more than Rhys and Sadie as Rhy's parents are wonderful, caring parents who thought Hockey is important - their son is more and then Sadie's brothers Oliver and Liam - the younger one Liam stole my heart right through the story.  Unsteady is an edgier read as it talks about mental health, alcoholism, PTSD, custody battles, and dirty manipulative coaches. Overall, if you were a fan of Icebreaker and want something that takes the story to another level - then check out Unsteady by Peyton Corrine - an Ice Hockey/ Skating romance with grit.
