Review: Fast Girls - Elise Hooper

Review: Fast Girls - Elise Hooper - July 2020 People who follow my book reviews will know that I often am not a fan of historical fiction but I discovered last year that I have enjoyed Historical fiction that has been written based on true events. Fast Girls captured my attention in two ways from the cover as it felt like a matte cover rather than the usual glossy covers that most books have. This did make the book feel heavier in weight. As someone who doesn't follow sports, I was unaware of the history of women entering the Olympics. Fast Girls opened my eyes to the introduction to women running and participating in track and field activities. Especially as this was back in the 1920s/1930s when women were supposed to be thin females, have jobs like secretaries, or even be someone's wife and mother. If women were athletic they were supposed to be participating in events like ice skating or gymnastics. Not track and running. These sorts of sports made women sweat and look ma...

Review: Speak Easy, Speak Love - McKelle George

Image
Review: Speak Easy, Speak Love - McKelle George - September 2017 I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked up Speak Easy, Speak Love by McKelle George, all I knew was I had a cover crush on the book. It was also a reimagined version of Shakespeare's Much Ado about Nothing. Speak Easy, Speak Love is set during the time of the prohibition and follows the lives of six teenagers during what they would view as possibly the best summer and times of their lives. We have Beatrice who has been kicked out of her high-school and shipped off to live with her Uncle at their Bed and Breakfast Hey Nonny which also doubles as a speakeasy. Beatrice dreams of one day becoming a female doctor. Hero, whose parents own Hey Nonny who is the type of Diva who dreams of a better life. Benedict, who is a rich preppy boy who would instead trade in his silver spoon for this life and wants to be the next F. Scott Fitzgerald or Charles Dickens. Claude - one of his schoolmates whose along for th...
