Review: Murder at the Royal Ruby - #Obsession Collection - Nita Prose - July 2023 Work has been an absolute whirlwind this past week ,the kind of busy that has me staying later than I'd like and trudging through the door with barely enough energy to string a sentence together. As much as I hate to admit it, my reading had been waning a few evenings in a row, and for a bookworm, there really is no worse feeling. So, in true book lover fashion, I did what any of us would do, I scratched that reading itch with a short, satisfying quick read that had been quietly waiting for me on my Kindle. Sometimes a book just knows when it's time to be picked up! Now, most of you will know Nita Prose from her beloved series featuring Molly the Maid, but this little gem takes us somewhere entirely different behind the velvet curtains and into the dazzling, cutthroat world of theatre. We are introduced to a young, passionate wannabe actress who has been paying her dues, grinding away and waitin...

Review: The Kill Clause - Lisa Unger

Review: The Kill Clause - Lisa Unger - December 2025 I wasn't feeling my best when I picked up The Kill Clause by Lisa Unger - one of those mornings where nothing quite appeals and you're scrolling aimlessly through your reading options. On a whim, I clicked on this Amazon Original short story, and I'm so glad I did. Sometimes the perfect read finds you exactly when you need it. From the opening pages, this book gave me serious The Long Kiss Goodnight vibes you know, that brilliant Geena Davis and Samuel L. Jackson action film that perfectly blends Christmas cheer with explosive assassin drama. Unger captures that same energy: holiday setting, deadly professionals, and a protagonist whose conscience complicates everything. We meet Paige, a woman pulled from foster care and molded into a lethal assassin by her mentor Nora. She's been trained to execute targets without hesitation, but when she arrives to complete her latest assignment, everything unravels. The target...

Review: Golden Hills - Jennifer Weiner

Review: Golden Hills - Jennifer Weiner - June 2023 I'll be honest – I've been in one of those reading slumps that every book lover dreads. You know the feeling: picking up book after book, only to set them down after a few pages, nothing quite clicking. So when I spotted Jennifer Weiner's "Golden Hills" as an Amazon Original Short Story, it felt like exactly what I needed: something quick, digestible, and from an author I trust to deliver emotional depth without requiring a massive time commitment. What I got was so much more than a slump-buster. "Golden Hills" centers on Ida Berkowitz, a senatorial candidate whose seemingly assured victory gets complicated when her past resurfaces in the form of Marissa Schuyler – her former camp bunkmate and the keeper of a decades-old secret. Weiner masterfully captures that stomach-dropping moment when your carefully constructed adult life collides with the messy realities of who you used to be. Ida and Marissa...

Review: His Happy Place - Zakiya Dalilia Harris

Review: His Happy Place - Book #2 Getaway Collection - Zakiya Dalila Harris - August 2022 When life feels overwhelming or a reading slump creeps in, I find solace in the bite-sized brilliance of an Amazon Original Story. Their brevity is perfect for scratching that literary itch without committing to a full-length novel. His Happy Place by Zakiya Dalila Harris delivered just that—a suspenseful, quick read—but left me grappling with the open-ended conclusion that these stories are infamous for. While I enjoy a bit of ambiguity, I also crave closure, and the ending of His Happy Place left me with a lingering, maddening what if . Did I figure it out, or am I just telling myself a story? The premise is captivating: a romantic getaway to a remote cabin in upstate New York. Ama’s boyfriend, Nathan, promises her a weekend of intimacy and escape, far from the chaos of city life. On paper, it sounds idyllic. But the serenity of the wilderness quickly turns unsettling as Ama starts to questio...

Review: Let Her Be - Book #6 Hush Series - Lisa Unger - July 2020 I was in one of those moods the other night where I wanted to read something, but everything I clicked on and tried was a DNF the time was clicking on and I knew If I mucked around and started a novel, I wouldn't be able to sleep as I would have been stuck right into it. So I clicked on one of the Amazon Original Stories I had. These are great little quick reads and scratch that reading itch.  I knew I would enjoy this one as well as Lisa Unger is a favorite thriller writer of mine. This book starts with introducing us to Will - he is a writer but with dark demons. He has lost the one he loved and then tried to commit suicide. Now a couple of years later, he has got his life back on track and writing and is meeting with an old friend Emily. She knew his former girlfriend Anisa who no one has seen for over a year except for the odd Instagram post. Will decides to go on a hunt for her and Emily tags along, but as h...

Review: Snowflakes - Ruth Ware

Review: Snowflakes - Book #1 Hush Collection - Ruth Ware - July 2020 Some days I get in these indecisive moods where I know I want to read something, but nothing grabs me. When I feel like this, I have a few quick reads on my Kindle that I know will just scratch that reading itch and hit the right spot. Snowflakes by Ruth Ware was one of those books. It starts with the War happening in what sounded like the UK and police/guards coming to the family's door. We hear gunshots as some of the family manage to escape and others are killed or so we believe. As I read this book, I imagined it being set in the 1940s at the time of World War 2, however, as we move along with the book we discover all is not what it seems. Laura and her siblings were raised on an island and were told that they were safe there from the War happening on the mainland, one that killed their mother. However, Laura is about to learn when her brother Cain disappears one night that all is not what it appears and that ...
