Review: 99 Red Balloons - Libby Carpenter

Grace is eight years old, and instead of coming straight home from school, she decided to stop into the dairy and has been kidnapped. What will happen next is Grace's aunty Stephanie will rally with Grace's mum Emma to discover what has happened to Grace and who has taken her? As the story goes on, we also have another storyline of Maggie Taylor whose granddaughter Sophie went missing years ago in the same scenario as Grace. Maggie's daughter couldn't handle the loss and killed herself. When she sees Grace and then the press release on TV she gets a jolt as one of the girls looks a lot like her Sophie, but how can that be? Reading the book, we learn that Emma's and Stephanie's mum is hiding a bucketload of secrets and that it has to do with how Emma and Stephanie came to be? Has someone finally realized the truth and had decided to exact revenge for the disappearance years ago?  99 Red Balloons started off as a fast-paced mystery and then started to slow down in the middle, and at one point I have to admit I wanted it to speed up a bit. The other thing I found annoying was that the story glossed over Sophie's disappearance and focused quite heavily on Grace's. It would have been nice to see a bit more of Sophie's story and her reunion with her grandmother which I was disappointed we didn't get to read how it went as the story just ended.  However, if you are up for a UK mystery novel, then check out 99 Red Balloons by Elisabeth (Libby) Carpenter today.

Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: August 18, 2017

Blurb

When a marriage of convenience turns into the passion of a lifetime…

Holden “Havoc” Thompson

My job as the leader of the Moonshine Task Force is my life. I eat, breathe, and sleep it. The men under my command mean the world to me. Knowing they count on my guidance has kept my demons at bay for longer than I care to admit.

The control I have over myself is an iron fist that sometimes threatens to squeeze the life out of me. What I want more than anything is to live again – let go of the hurt smothering every bit of light I have in this darkness.

I don’t expect it to come in the form of a Moonshiner’s daughter needing my protection.

Leighton Strather

My whole life has been defined by who my family is. In the state of Alabama, we’re number one with a target on our backs. The danger and prestige isn’t for me. I don’t care about the money, and I care too much about the families we’ve ruined.

My brother and my dad are proud of it. They wear their arrest records like a badge of honor. Me? I want as far away from the lifestyle as I can get.

It’s the only reason I ask Holden to marry me. At least that's what I tell myself.

I never expect his whispered yes to cause such upheaval in my life. Even though I resist, I learn some havoc is good – and this one? It’s a whirlwind of lust, hope, and love and all I can do is let it sweep me away.

Review: Almost Jamie - Gina Robinson

Doctor Blair Edwards has dreamed like many females around the world to have her own Jamie and be just like Elinor. These are characters on a Scottish show called Jamie which sounded a bit like Outlander meets Vikings. Jamie is the in-thing, and this is about to help Austin who is an IT Geek get his girl as Austin bears a strong resemblance to the character Jamie. In fact, he could be the actor's double and Blair, especially when decked in her handmade Elinor's costume which her Aunt played she looks like Sam the main female lead.
After an accident involving swords at Comic-Con, the pair meet as Blair doctors Austin and in return since Austin and his friends have VIP passes to the Jamie panel. Blair gets a free pass, and the pair meets the lead roles alongside having a bit of VIP treatment as the crowd can't get over their strong likenesses. Has Austin finally met the girl of his dreams and at Comic-Con of all places, the perfect place to meet a fellow geek and cosplayer? Has Blair finally snagged her Jamie? Can this finally mean that we get to see her say goodbye to Neil - who by the way, I didn't like? I love Austin and want her with him. Being a geek chic myself, I loved this book as it had comic -con, pop-culture references and romantic comedy aspects to the book and now I am looking forward to reading the next three books in the series.

Excerpt

That night I dreamed of a lover with lush auburn curls. I saw him braced over me, his powerful arms taut and muscled, gently keeping his weight off me, while pounding passionately into me. My heels dug into his bare back as I urged him in, gasping with each deep thrust.
He was smiling, his green eyes tender with emotion and filled with awe, as if he couldn't believe his good luck. It was an expression that always amazed me and filled me with wonder.
I was laughing as I taunted him and urged him to give it to me harder. He was happy to oblige, teasing back. Beams of sunlight streamed through his hair, haloing him and highlighting the red.
I dreamed of a forest, tall firs and sunshine overhead streaming through their branches. The scent of ferns, wild grass, and woodland floor so real I was sure I was actually smelling them. That I was really there in that forest with that man.
Heat. Grass. Birds singing.
Strong shoulders. Physical strength held in check. Breathtaking passion. Laughter.
Dreams morph and confuse and are hard to untangle when you try to remember them after you wake. They evaporate too easily.
Jamie? Scotland?
Bagpipes and fiddles in the distance. The sounds of a brook.
Clutching the man to me, I wrapped my legs around him. Never wanting to let him go. Looking into his face, confused. Not Jamie.
I woke in the heat of the action, arching up to meet him.
His name was on my lips. Austin.
