Review: Royal Blood - Aimee Carter

Review: Royal Blood - Book #1 Royal Blood Series - Aimee Carter - March 2023

I first have to clarify something, I got this book initially thinking it had to do with Royal Vampires or something "Blood" as I thought she was on the cover drinking a cup of blood, not English tea. This book though was a great read and reminded me a lot of the author Ally Carter where in fact in places I had to remind myself it wasn't an Ally Carter adventure book but another Carter - this time Aimee. In Royal Blood, we first meet 17-year-old Evan who has been expelled from yet another boarding school and instead of being shipped off to her home in Virginia or Juvie, she is being taken to her father's place in London. This would have been alright if she was a normal girl but she's not - her father is the King of England and she is his illegitimate daughter and the one he has kept hidden away from the world. Her Dad's is her last resort and she's planning to bide the time away for one more month and then when she is 18, she can go anywhere and away from his control. Evan will cause a bit of mayhem for the Royal Family but doing so will help realize that things aren't always what they seem, especially when she finds herself almost raped and accused of murder by the Scotland Yard. Can Evan prove her innocence with the help of her cousin Kit and also finally be accepted by a family that has snubbed her for years, even more so when she learns the real truth about her mother's relationship with the King and that it was true love, not a summer affair/fling. I also loved the fact that besides being an edgier YA read and filled with adventure, Royal Blood also touches on LGBTQA+ representation and Mental Health. This is one book that is a do not judge a book by the cover as it reaches more than what meets the eye. I am now looking forward to reading Book #2 Royal Scandal by Aimee Carter. This book also reminded me of the movie What a Girl Wants crossed with The Princess Diaries.
