Review: Because the Night - Kylie Scott

Review: Because the Night - Kylie Scott - March 2025
Okay, let me be real with you all , I have been in a serious reading slump lately. You know the kind. You pick up book after book, read a few chapters, and just... nothing. No spark. No that pull that makes you want to cancel all your plans and stay up until 2am. It has been frustrating, and honestly a little heartbreaking for someone who lives and breathes books.
So I did what any self-respecting book lover does in a crisis I went back to a sure thing. I reached up to my trusty bookshelf and pulled down Because the Night by Kylie Scott. I have never once been let down by a Kylie Scott book, and after a recent rewatch of Vampires Suck had me deep in my Twilight feelings, the timing felt absolutely perfect.
And you know what? It worked. Slump: shattered.
In Because the Night, we meet Skye Carter, a property manager who makes the very unfortunate and very life-altering mistake of accidentally waking a sleeping vampire named Lucas while checking on a house. Lucas hasn't exactly been keeping up with current events (understatement of the century), and Skye pays the price when a hungry, disoriented Lucas bites her, turning her into one of the first vampire newborns in years. From that moment, Skye's life is flipped completely upside down. Not only does she have to figure out this whole vampire thing- the hunger, the heightened senses, all of it but she's also become a political liability. Lucas broke a sacred vampire treaty by turning her, and now there are powerful vampires who believe she simply should not exist. Being undead has never felt so dangerous.
Kylie Scott does what she does best here: she takes a familiar world and makes it feel fresh and fun, with characters you genuinely root for and a romance that simmers in all the right ways. Skye is immediately relatable thrown into chaos, trying to hold it together, and navigating a world she never asked to be part of. And Lucas? Delicious in every sense of the word.
One of my absolute favourite little moments was the Easter egg for long-time Kylie Scott fans. When Henry casually mentions meeting Marissa at a Stage Dive concert, I genuinely laughed out loud. That cheeky nod to the Stage Dive series is exactly the kind of thing that makes being a fan of an author so rewarding. It felt like a little gift just for us.
If you grew up devouring vampire fiction in the 90s and 2000s, bingeing True Blood, sobbing over The Vampire Diaries, or proudly picking Team Edward or Team Jacob, Because the Night is going to hit you right in the nostalgia. It carries those same intoxicating vibes, the forbidden romance, the supernatural politics, the addictive escapism while still feeling contemporary and compulsively readable.
It was exactly the book I needed to pull me out of my slump, and I have a feeling it'll do the same for you.
Because the Night by Kylie Scott gets a very enthusiastic 4 Phantom Stars from me. Highly, highly recommended especially if you're a fan of the author or just need a good vampire fix. 🖤🧛♀️
