Review: Slice - Angie Caedis

Review: Slice - Angie Caedis - September 2023
There's something so satisfying about judging a book by its cover and having it actually pay off, and that's exactly what happened with Slice. I had absolutely no idea what this story was about when I picked it up , I just knew I loved the cover and had to click in. Sometimes that's all it takes, isn't it?
What I got was one of my all-time favourite tropes: a group of people stranded on a secluded island, being picked off one by one. There's just something so deliciously tense about that setup, and Caedis leans right into it.
The story follows Bec, celebrating her thirtieth birthday (which, funnily enough, feels extra fitting to be reading about on my own birthday today) with a trip her boyfriend Tyler has organised a private mansion, a secluded island, and their whole friend group along for the week. It starts off exactly how these trips always do in books like this: sun, drinks, laughter... and then the cracks start showing.
And oh, the secrets. Bec's spark with Tyler's friend Miles. A drunken one-night stand that's about to complicate everything. Monique, Benny's wife, who has history with Stevie and Benny not having the faintest idea his wife is bisexual. It's a tangled web of connections, and Caedis does a great job slowly peeling back layer after layer as the week goes on, until, of course, someone turns up dead and it becomes horribly clear the killer can only be one of them.
I'll be honest, the middle stretch is a slow burn. There were moments I wanted things to move a little quicker. But it's the kind of slow burn that's clearly laying groundwork, because when the reveal finally came, I genuinely did not see it coming. That's such a rare and wonderful feeling as a reader , to be surprised.
If you love the "trapped on an island with a killer among us" trope as much as I do, Slice is well worth your time. Just maybe don't read it right before booking your next remote getaway , it might have you double-checking the guest list.
A cosy, twisty read to end the day on. Here's to another year of good books.
