Lindsey Reviews: Blasphemy by Sherman Alexie

Blasphemy
Sherman Alexie
Grove Press
2013

This book is a compendium of stories written by the celebrated Native American author Sherman Alexie.  The stories encompass and describe the lives of the Modern Native American and the pursuance and drive to preserve and uphold their culture; through plot and character, the author uses these devices to explore the dissonance and alienation of contemporary Native American life.   Alexie relays stories which offer a wonderful insight into the life of the modern Native Americans which in turn are fascinating but can make for grim reading. The characters he portrays grapple with issues such as alcoholism, illness and the tragic loss of their language and traditional customs which cause them to  question their own authenticity in our modern world.
This is a deep book which offers a realistic insight into the world of the modern Native American and the struggles they face.  The stories are wonderfully plotted, gritty and have a deep sense of realism.  A perfect book to read in its entirety or to dip in and out of.
