Review: June First - Jennifer Hartmann

Review: June First - Jennifer Hartmann - May 2022

There's something special about settling into your favorite reading spot with a chunky book that you just know is going to wreck you in the best possible way. For me, that's usually the bus—my sacred space where I can lose myself completely in a story without interruption. When I picked up June First by Jennifer Hartmann, I knew I was in for exactly that kind of read.

Jennifer Hartmann has become one of my go-to authors for a reason. She brings this raw edginess to her new adult romances that keeps me coming back, and this book absolutely delivered on that promise.

The story opens with six-year-old Brant and his best friend Theo, two little boys living next door to each other with their whole lives ahead of them. Then tragedy strikes—Brant's parents are killed, and he moves in with Theo's family just as baby June arrives home from the hospital. From that very first moment Brant lays eyes on her, she becomes his light in the darkness, and you can feel the connection radiating off the pages. It's clear from the start that these two were never meant to be siblings—they were destined for something deeper, something that transcends the family structure they've been placed in.

Watching Brant grow up and try desperately to distance himself from June is absolutely heartbreaking. Every time he pulls away, you can feel a piece of his soul withering because she truly is his other half. Jennifer Hartmann captures that imprinted, fated-mate dynamic beautifully—think Jacob and Renesmee from Twilight, that undeniable soul-deep bond that defies explanation.

But let me be clear: this isn't some fluffy romance. Jennifer Hartmann doesn't shy away from the hard stuff. There are tragedies that'll have you reaching for tissues, judgmental characters who view their relationship as forbidden or worse, and moments where love feels utterly shattered. The angst is real, friends, and it cuts deep.

If you're a slow-burn lover who craves emotional depth and isn't afraid of a story that challenges conventional boundaries, June First needs to be on your TBR immediately. Trust me when I say—don't wait until June First 2026 to dive into this one. Your heart will thank you (even while it's breaking).

Perfect for: Fans of forbidden romance, slow-burn angst, and emotional rollercoasters.
