Review: Barren Cape - Michelle Prak - April 2025

Scrolling through my Libby Library books, I came across this Australian thriller called Barren Cape which sounded up my alley. The book starts with Mac and Elise being evicted from their home as the landlord wants to use it as a holiday home as he can get $200 a night with it. Elise heads back home to her parents, but Mac, she has no one and couch surfs for a while until she finds herself with no other option than to sleep in her car.  Driving around, Mac comes across Barren Cape which is out in South Adelaide. It was to be a luxury hotel but of course, when COVID hit, the money dried up and now the luxury hotel is just a concrete shell with a few rooms. Mac breaks in and sets up camp in one of the rooms, she isn't the only one here though as we have also in other areas - an escaped convict and a sixteen-year-old girl Brex. Each just looking for a place to lay their head away from the world. The book splits into two storylines and plots where we have Brex and her two friends who accidentally kill someone and hide the body and Mac and her friends who were mainly invited by Elise who find the body. When their story intersects, Mac is kidnapped by Brex and her friends. Can she escape or will she die in this Barren industrial building? At the end of the book though, Mac won't be the only one with dark secrets as Brex and Elise end up tangled as well. This was a great AU thriller and also shone the spotlight on an issue that is happening everywhere around the world with not enough houses for people and a strong case of homelessness or moving back in with family occurring.
