Review: My Almost Ex - Piper Rayne

Review: My Almost Ex - Book #2 The Greene Family Series - Piper Rayne - April 2021
Staring at my overflowing bookshelf the other day, I felt that familiar paralysis of choice. Too many books, too little time – a problem entirely of my own making. But when my eyes landed on Piper Rayne's My Almost Ex, the decision was easy. I've never met a Piper Rayne book I didn't love, and her family sagas are particularly addictive. The promise of a big family means more books in the series – always a win in my book!
What immediately drew me in was the amnesia trope, one of my absolute favorites in romance. There's something irresistible about characters rediscovering their love story, and Rayne delivers this beautifully.
The story opens with Lucy Greene walking into a bar, expecting to see her husband Adam, only to be met with shocked faces. For Adam, this is devastating – Lucy walked out a year ago without explanation, and he's trying to move on with someone new. But Lucy has amnesia and remembers nothing of leaving. To her, she's still Adam's devoted wife, still madly in love with the man she married.
As Adam reluctantly helps Lucy piece together her memories, their chemistry reignites effortlessly. But the central tension remains: what happens when Lucy remembers why she left? Will the truth send her running again, or can their love survive whatever tore them apart the first time?
Without spoilers, I'll say the reason Lucy originally left hit me hard. It's something deeply personal to me – I've walked that same difficult path. The difference is, I had a partner who chose to stay and fight alongside me, unlike Lucy's initial experience. Seeing this struggle represented in romance was both validating and emotional.
What makes this book particularly special is its representation of endometriosis, something I rarely see addressed in romance novels. Piper Rayne handles this sensitive topic with care and authenticity, showing both the physical and emotional toll it takes on relationships.
My Almost Ex perfectly balances the sweetness of rediscovered love with the genuine pain of real-world challenges. Adam and Lucy's journey feels authentic – messy, complicated, but ultimately hopeful. Piper Rayne proves once again why she's a master of family dynamics and emotional depth.
This was actually a bookstagram gift, which makes loving it even sweeter! I'm already eager to dive into the rest of the Greene family series. If this first installment is any indication, I'm in for quite the emotional ride.
For anyone who loves second-chance romance with real heart and meaningful representation, My Almost Ex is absolutely worth your time.
