Impeccable Petunia is a hen that lives in a
chicken coop with other hens. Petunia is a loner; she prefers to tend her
garden and stay out of the way of the others. Because of this, Petunia finds
herself an outcast, an oddity with the other hens, as they think that she
should be like them: spending the days gossiping, roosting and chasing
bugs. Petunia develops a close bond with
her human owner “Silkie” who takes her from the other hens to bring her inside
her house to help her paint and remodel.
Petunia is a remarkable hen in that she loves colours and helps her
human with colour choices much to both the chickens and Macy, the cat’s,
chagrin. This is of course unheard of
for a hen, as normally, the only time hens go inside is when they are selected
for lunch. The actions of Petunia cause
her to stand out and be bullied; especially by the ferocious Bernadette. As Bernadette is keen to please her
domineering mother Bryn, she hatches a plan which puts Petunia’s life in
peril.
This was a delightful story: not just a mere fairy tale. The author shows through Petunia how
important it is to follow your own heart, dare to be different and to
be “impeccable.” It dealt with themes of
isolation, bullying, friendship and being strong in the face of your enemies
and how sometimes the most unlikely people can turn into steadfast allies and
ultimately friends.
It
is a wonderful, heart-warming tale and I enjoyed reading it tremendously.
