Fierce Fairytales: Poems and Stories to Stir Your Soul

Review: Fierce Fairytales - Nikita Gill - September 2018

Earlier this year when I had a terrible day at work, I read a book called New Erotica for Feminists and I found myself laughing at it and it cheered me up. While browsing the new books at work, the other day this book caught my attention as the cover was similar. The author Nikita Gill also reading the back and inside cover had taken a feminist spin to the classic fairytales and shown them all from the heroes to heroines and even the villains in a brand-new light. This book was amazing and just what I needed as a relaxing read the other night. We had Jack climbing the beanstalk as a metaphor from getting away from the abusiveness in his life to Sleeping Beauty not needing a man to wake her up from her slumber after being pricked in the finger to why Ursula hated the mermaids and took her pain out on Ariel aka The Little Mermaid to Hansel and Gretel defeating the evil witch and not letting their parents dictate their future and how Bella wasn't as brave as she is portrayed but the real reason she did what she did - out of dependency.  If you love fairytales and wanting a 21st-century spin on the classic stories, then check out Fierce Fairytales: Poems and Stories to Stir Your Soul as you will fall in love with the tales all over again and see them all in a brand-new light.
