Review: The Night Swim - Megan Goldin
Review: The Night Swim - Megan Goldin - August 2020
After hearing good things about this author, I decided to grab and read her book The Night Swim. What drew me to this book was that it had a podcast true crime setting. The Night Swim starts with a death that happened 25 years ago in the small town where a girl was found drowned - Jenny Stills and the cause of death was written as drowning, the thing was that this girl was a really good swimmer and she had bruises on her body. Her younger sister Hannah is convinced it was murder and that it was covered up by authorities. Fast forward twenty-five years and Rachel Krall - the podcaster is back in that smalltown as she is covering a trial where a swimmer - Scott is being accused of raping Katy. As Rachel is in town and Hannah keeps persisting and leaving her clues about her sister's death - Rachel being the investigative type decides to look into it and what she will uncover is a death of a girl similar to Katy whom the town just like Katy wanted to write off as the "s" word and that just like Katy - Jenny asked for it. I quite enjoyed the Night Swim and how Megan Goldin brought the two cases together with a small connection and I liked the small digs it had at the Brock Turner case which was a real-life trial of a college swimmer Brock who was accused of rape and played a role in the #metoo moment and the history of college frat rapes. I am now looking forward to reading her next book "The Escape Room".
