Review: Whisper Island - Carissa Ann Lynch
Review: Whisper Island - Carissa Ann Lynch - February 2021
One of my favorite mystery writers is Carissa Ann Lynch and I loved Whisper Island as it contained one of my favorite types of tropes in books - the revenge plot. In this book, we first meet Riley who has gone to Art School and makes friends with three other students Scarlett, Sam, and Mia. The girls are wanting to get away but with student debt, they need somewhere cheap and they have a plan to create art in solitude similar to an artist's retreat. Sam's brother has a friend that's family owned a house on Whisper Island and it is currently empty and the perfect environment for them to gather inspiration. The girls arrive at the house and it seems they are not alone as Sam's brother and his new girlfriend Opal have decided to crash the party. This rattles Mia as Sam's brother is the one who got away and broke her heart. During the stay, Scarlett finds a journal and in it was a sentence that jumped out at her "Elena Blackwood was the first to die". The name sounds familiar but Scarlett can't put her finger on it. During the next few days strange occurrences will happen and soon one by one, each person on the island will be attacked. Why is someone doing this and who was Elena Blackwood as it seems to connect to her? I did not see this twist coming in the book and was surprised myself. I also loved the story and the idea of hand-crafting jigsaw puzzles as sounds like an amazing skill and craft to be able to do, this is coming from someone who isn't very crafty myself. If you love novels like Ruth Ware's One by One and Gretchen McNeil's Ten, then you will love Whisper Island by Carissa Ann Lynch.
