VBT# One Little Mistake - Miranda Rijks

Review: One Little Mistake - Miranda Rijks - November 2025
When I saw One Little Mistake come up on offer from Zooloos Book Tours, I jumped at the chance. Miranda Rijks has become one of my favourite thriller writers, and she certainly didn't disappoint with this twisty tale of friendship, betrayal, and consequences.
The story kicks off at a hen's party where a group of friends are living their best lives, but the next day everything changes. Kate suddenly finds herself completely iced out by her closest friends, and she has no idea why. The truth is devastating: her secret friendship spreadsheet—where she rated each friend out of 100—has gone viral. Now everyone knows exactly what she really thinks of them.
What follows is a gripping exploration of what happens when your private thoughts become public knowledge. Kate begs for forgiveness, but her friends refuse to grant it. As her perfect life spirals out of control, she discovers a painful truth: sometimes the people closest to you are the very ones who will stab you in the back. The betrayals she never saw coming lead to murder, frame jobs, and affairs emerging from every corner.
This book gave me serious Harriet the Spy vibes—that moment when Harriet's diary is discovered and her friends turn against her mirrors Kate's experience perfectly. Both stories capture that gut-wrenching feeling of having your private thoughts exposed and watching relationships crumble as a result.
Reading this made me deeply reflective about my own experiences. Like Kate, I've had a personal statement taken wildly out of context, which cost me my job. I learned the hard way to be more careful about what I post on Facebook and witnessed firsthand the lengths some people will go to as keyboard warriors, determined to tear down good people.
Miranda Rijks has crafted a thriller that's not just entertaining but genuinely thought-provoking. It made me question how well we really know our friends and whether anyone could survive having their unfiltered thoughts made public. The pacing is excellent, the twists keep coming, and the emotional core rings painfully true.
One Little Mistake is a cautionary tale for our digital age—a reminder that sometimes one slip-up is all it takes to watch your entire world come crashing down.
