Review: How to Be Lost - Amanda Eyre Ward -August 2005
One of my favourite things to do is go the Book Fairs that the Lions or Rotary Club hold every year as they have some really good books for cheap prices and one of the one's I picked up was "How to Be Lost" by Amanda Eyre Ward. What attracted me to the book was firstly the cover -in which I had the one on the right and then the little blue sticker on the book that said "As good as the Lovey Bones or your money back" as I enjoyed the book "The Lovely Bones" by Alice Sebold.
In How to be Lost we meet Caroline , the middle daughter of Isabelle who works as a bartender in New Orleans. The family have been through alot as fifteen years ago Caroline's baby sister Ellie who was five at the time went missing and was never found. Now Fifteen years later , Caroline's older sister Madeline wants closure from the incident as she is about to start her own family. Caroline though has never felt that Ellie is dead and has always believed she is still out there -somewhere waiting to be found. When one Christmas, her mum finds a magazine picture set in Montana - the girl holds an uncanny resemblance to Ellie , Caroline's mum begs her to go. When her mum passes , Caroline with nothing to lose sets out to find Ellie. The novel also includes letters written by a librarian named Agnes Fowler, who has Caroline's journey and Agnes's letters are pieced together - the real Ellie may be found ?
Is Caroline on a wild goose hunt or will she finally discover the actual truth of what happened to their sister Ellie that night fifteen years ago and earn Madeline and herself closure ?
I found it hard to compare to the Lovely Bones as the storylines were very different but I would have to say that I probably enjoyed The Lovely Bones more than How to Be Lost, but in saying that How to Be Lost came with an amazing tale.
