VBT# A Peach of a Pair - Kim Boykin
Review: A Peach of a Pair - Kim Boykin - August 2015
Set in 1953 in the South we meet Nettie Gilbert , who is off studying at Columbia University to become a music teacher . Though loving school, she cannot wait for graduation to arrive which is basically just around the corner after her senior recital. Nettie cannot wait to return home to Alabama and see her family and of course finally marry her childhood sweetheart Brooks whom they have been promised to each other since college. However life will chuck a massive wrench in Nettie's plans as days before her recital, she recieves a letter from home and an invitation to a wedding - the groom reads Brooks but instead of her name it's her Sister's "Sissy". This can't be , how could her sister be the one marrying Brooks ? Turns out it's a bit more than just marriage as she is also having his baby. Feeling broken, hurt and betrayed Nettie takes a leave of absence and settles into a life without Brooks . During her absence Nettie applies for a job as a carer for two sister Lurleen and Emily as Lurleen is getting sick . During this time , Emily and Lurleen become closer to Nettie and help her as she helps them with their daily lives. During this time, she also mets Remmy - the Doctor and his sister. Has life given Nettie a second chance as she becomes close to Remmy and her life here ? A Peach of a Pair was a fun read , that also shows the dynamics of siblings and that often what you see on the surface isn't what is bubbling below. I loved this book as well due to the Southern charm scattered throughout and the relationship between Nettie, Emily and Lurleen was inspirational and made me smile as despite their up's and downs and age differences - it showed what true friendship should be like.
