Review: Never Eighteen - Megan Bostic - January 2012

Austin is dying and has Cancer.  He has decided that he doesn't want to go through anymore Chemo and that he hasn't got much time left, so in the tradition of the book "Thirteen Reasons Why" and "The Little Blue Envelopes". Austin writes out a bucket list of all the things he needs to do before he dies . On his bucket list is not only fun and enjoyable moments like ride a scary fair-ride and eat spicy food but also heart-wrenching decisions that will not only change his life but those who he visits. From his best friend Jake's mother who is busy grieving for her son Jake , a boy that Austin used to bully and never forgot about , Allie - his old friend whom he has watched deteriorate and lose herself to his friend Trev who needs to get it off his chest and tell someone his secret before it kills him and of course fix his own family as five years ago his mother and father split and on that day , they no longer stopped talking to each other but his mum also stopped talking to her mother.  I really loved Never Eighteen as it shows us that even though life is short and fleeting, if we wish to by going out of our way and saying a couple of words - we can make a difference in someone else's life - no matter how big or small the gesture is.
Of course, this has a sad ending- so if you aren't one for sad books where the main character does die, then do not read this.
Never Eighteen by Megan Bostic is what you get when you cross "The Fault in Our Stars" with "Thirteen Reasons Why".
