Romance: Real vs fantasy

I’m a reader of everything. Some of my favorite books are so far from romance novels, people often wonder why I write romance. It’s because I love all those feelings a person has in a new relationship. From meeting someone for the first time, to the butterflies and the first kisses, to realizing you’re helplessly, hopelessly in love.

How much of that is real and how much is fantasy?

All of it is real. Well, at least for me, it is. There really are butterflies and shivers of excitement, tingles on every nerve-ending just from the sound of someone’s voice. I’ve experienced these feelings, and that’s why I love writing about them. I met and fell in love with my husband when I was 15. I had the world’s biggest crush on him! He was a senior and barely knew I existed, until one night, when I was 16, suddenly there he was, saying my name. It was amazing! And I swore I would marry him. And I did. But, writing about new relationships keeps those feelings fresh in my mind, and reminds me of how head of heels I was for him all those years ago. Especially now, when we’ve been married 10 years and there are some days I want to throttle him. haha!

Of course, there’s a lot to romance novels and movies that aren’t realistic, like flawless heroes or heroines. However, it’s true that in those first months, even the first couple of years, new romances are never about concentrating on those flaws. I think that’s why a lot of romance novels tend to leave them out. I write romantic comedy so it’s always fun to let some fo the flaws shine :)
