Review: Heartbeat - Elizabeth Scott

Review: Heartbeat - Elizabeth Scott - January 2014

One of my favourite things about being a book reviewer is that I get the chance to read books before they are out on the shelves and it's even better if it is by an author that I really enjoy. One of my favourite teen edgy authors is Elizabeth Scott and if you were to read her backlist of books you would see that she is one amazing author as each of her books have won numerous awards over the years. In Heartbeat , she targets the topic where the main character Emma's mother has died but what amazingly hasn't happened is that Emma's mother was pregnant and the baby is still alive. What Emma's stepfather has decided to do is to keep her mum on life support in order for the baby to grow. Emma believes that this decision is selfish as how does anyone know what her mother wanted. In this novel we read as Emma's life starts to head in a downward spiral and even her friends from before the incident aren't able to pull her back up to the surface. Enter Caleb - he is a social outcast and the guy who people label as BAD TROUBLE. He has after ruining his father's car been sentenced to community service at the hospital where he meets Emma after a visit to her mother. The two start to bond as we learn about Caleb's past and the tragedies and incidents he has had to deal with growing up.  Is Caleb the one needed to help save Emma from drowing in sorrow ? Can Caleb show Emma the power of what one tiny heartbeat , a patter can do to another human life ?
Stay tuned for Heartbeat by Elizabeth Scott, a Book that all should add to their 2014 reading lists.
