Review: The Book of Cold Cases - Simone St. James
Review: The Book of Cold Cases - Simone St. James - March 2022
One of the authors that I decided for
2024 to read her books backlist is Simone St. James and I am slowly getting
through them. This is the fourth one I have read and out of the four, there has
only been one DNF. One of the themes that I have seen as a recurrence in all of
Simone St. James's books is that she loves to have the ghosts of those who died
violently still hanging around and haunting those in the present times. This
book starts with four murders - we have Julian Greer, Marianne Greer, and then
two men on the side of the road. The year was 1977 and the murders shocked the
small town of Claire Lake and the prime suspect was Beth Greer. A witness
placed her at the scene of the second crime and her car as well as ballistics
matched the gun that killed her father. Beth thought was innocent but was sent
to jail and labeled The LadyKiller. Now 40 years later, we meet Shea Collins
aka Girl A. She has her crime demons and she also writes a crime blog called
The Book of Cold Cases in her spare time. Her day job is working as a
receptionist at a doctor's clinic. Imagine her surprise when one day Beth Greer
walks in. Shea is shocked and follows her afterward, hoping to chat. Beth
offers Shea the chance to interview her as Beth has hidden the "real
killer" for forty years and now that she's dying, who better to tell her
story to than Shea Collins? Who killed the men and framed Beth? Was it someone
she knew or a stranger? Is that person still alive today? Like Simone's
previous titles I have read, this book jumps between a past and a present
timeline. Reading this book also inspired me yesterday to write an article
about another cold unsolved case that took place in 1945 aka The Missing Sodder
Children for an online magazine that I write a true crime column for called
Gothic Bite Magazine. Overall, if you love past/present timeline novels, ghosts,
and suspense, then check out The Book of Cold Cases by Simone St James.
