Review: Hazardous Conditions - Mikaela Bee - November 2022
It's Christmas Eve and so Harper has headed home for Christmas, this is the first one for her family without their dad. When she arrives home, the weather is getting worse, and looks like a snowstorm is headed their way. As the weather gets a little worse, Sophia makes up an excuse that she needs to feed her horse, Toby. Harper's car is lacking gas and aims to fill it up on the way but there are no gas stations open on the way. The girls get to the stables and feed the horses and start to head home when an accident happens the girls crash their car and the person in the other vehicle dies. The girls manage to get out, but Sophia is hurt and their phones are dead and no reception. Stuck in the crazy weather, the girls head to find safety for the night but they have to be careful as in their area is also a serial killer called The Executioner on the loose. Can the girls survive the evening? What happens when they come across a strange man, is he going to help or harm them? Can the girls make it back home or will this Christmas be their last? I enjoyed the book overall but was a little disappointed with the ending as it felt like the killer angle was swept under the rug, also I found Sophia to be a whiny and selfish sibling, and also the mum felt a bit lacking emotion considering that the Christmas before her husband died and then her kids almost died. If you want a YA Christmas thriller read, then check out Hazardous Conditions by Mikaela Bee.
