Review: Extreme College 101 - Eli Caplin -May 2013

Needing to prepare and start thinking about College for Next Year ? Not sure what to do exactly ? Extreme College 101 by Eli Caplin is the book for you, written by an American College Graduate. Whether you are going straight from high school to college or have discovered that in this day and age if you want to move higher up in a job role then you have to pass a degree . Then Extreme College 101 is your guide to helping you get through the steps of this decision.
From the first chapter of learning about yourself - what your learning habits are ? ( Are you a reader, writer, do you learn through practical or listening?) to discovering what it takes in attitudes and actions to become a lifelong learner.
Chapter two takes us into what is called "The Diploma Snatchers" ,which is colleges and courses that look like the easy way out from Online Diploma scams to Unaccrediated Colleges to that Negative self-talk of saying "I can't do this or I'm not good enough".
Chapter Three is all about getting started on the process by taking a look at your high school transcripts - which subjects did you do awesome in ? Which area of degree do you want to focus on? What did you enjoy ?
Chapter Four is all about implanting that knowledge that we all have tucked away and learning how to manage our time and figuring out how to optimise our transcript credits etc to looking out to see if there are any courses that you can do to help build up your transcript , so that once you are ready to apply to college - the schools can look and see that you are serious about attending and won't slack off .
Chapter Five is all about choosing the colleges that are right for you , and the ones that you think you would like to attend. Always make sure that you apply to 5-10 different colleges. That way if you don't get into the one you really wanted, you at least have a few back-ups to choose from. When looking at colleges, make sure to check out what programmes they have available and whether you would be a good fit. E.g growing up in New Zealand, we never had the schools like America but I used to dream that if I got to pick an American College - I would choose either Brown , Harvard, Sarah Lawerence, Wellesley, Columbia or Princeton as I am a passionate writer and these schools Journalism and Arts programmes looked amazing.
Chapter Six is all about creating your academic plan - what do you want to study, what do you want to achieve and how are you going to get there ? Is there Elective papers you have to take - which would you choose etc .
Chapter Seven is all about that "essay" requirement - How to write the "best" college essay , so that they will flick through the applications and they will stop and pluck you from their pile as yours is screaming "read me, read me".
Last but not least, Chapter Eight is the unfortunately important step with colleges and quite frankly any important step in your lives - MONEY. How will you fund for college ? Can you get a scholarship , financial aid etc ?
Also scattered throughout the book is tips , quotes and assignments to help readers and those wanting to apply to college to motivate them along the way.

If I was living in America, then Extreme College 101 would be the guide for me . I believe parents that this is a book that should be given to all as a pre-graduation present.
