VBT# House Rules - Rebecca Brooke
When I first saw the cover for this book, I was in two minds as I wasn't really in the mood to read a Mafia type book. As I got reading the book, it became apparent that it wasn't going to be like that as we’re introduced to our usual suspect of a playboy. One who has money and likes to sleep with women has a parade of them just wanting to get a night with Miller Hawes. He has the view of never wanting to settle down as who has time for relationships and apparently he is not the type of guy who can be loved or has time to be loved. By all means, he is your typical jerk. The thing though is that we readers know all about the misunderstood characters and more often than not, these are the ones that we fall in love with. The book started off with a Poker Match, and Miller Hawes wins one of the player's girlfriends's well now ex-girlfriend for the night. She has him captivated, and so he spends the night with her, and then one thing leads to another, and she ends up staying the whole night. For Miller, this is a first as he doesn't let women stay the night as that means something to him. Tess slips out in the early morning, and we are destined to believe that that's it. Over the next course of the novel, Tess finds herself in the midst of trouble as her ex-boyfriend Ray owes money to the wrong people, and they have come after Tess for it. One thing leads to another, and she goes to get a job at a bar and turns out the bar’s owned by none other than Mr. Miller Hawes. Now he has his girl back, will he do everything he can to hold onto her? What will happen when he discovers that no matter how much he wants to protect her, he can't help especially due to her need for independence and not relying on others as she’s taught everything comes with a price tag. Finishing House Rules by Rebecca Brooke, I have to admit that this book surprised me as I found myself enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would as I too came to love the character of Miller Hawes.
