Spring at The Little Duck Pond Café’ (Little Duck Pond Café 1)
Rosie Green
Kindle Edition

This is the first in a series of novellas by Rosie Green.

Ellie Farmer comes to Sunnybrook village to take some pictures for her Mum, who is suffering from the early onset of Alzheimer’s, in the hope it will help her memory and immediately makes an entrance. After falling in the local duck pond, Ellie is offered a helping hand from the Little Duck Pond café proprietor, Sylvia Symington.  Things have not been going well for Ellie: with her mum’s sad diagnosis and the discovery that her long -term boyfriend, Richard, has cheated on her with the gorgeous librarian Giselle, Ellie feels it is time for a new start.  When Sylvia informs Ellie that the best way to deal with her troubles is a change of scenery and offers her the flat above the café for 6 months respite, Ellie is at a crossroads.  Taking the bull by the horn, she packs in her receptionist’s job and moves to Sunnybrook.  Ellie embraces the village life with a new job and friendships and soon Ellie finds herself falling in love with the charismatic author, Zak Chamberlain. But Zak has secrets of his own and before long Ellie finds that she is presented with a dilemma.  With the 6-month time limit arriving, should Ellie take the chance for a new life and love or will the heartache of her past prevent her from finding happiness?

This was the first in a series of novellas by Rosie Green.  It was a light hearted, easy read with a host of wonderful characters.  You really got a sense of village life and community in the story.  The book was very life affirming and was a testament to the power of friendship and how sometimes in life you have to take a chance and seize happiness, whatever form it presents itself.  The love story between Zak and Ellie was really heartening.  Both have had past experiences which have made them wary of love and the reader really championed for them to be together as they are obviously made for each other.  The story also highlighted the theme of Alzheimer’s disease very empathetically with the interplay between Ellie and her mum Rose relayed in a realistic and sensitive manner.

A lovely story with wonderful characters.  I look forward to the next instalments.  Perfect reading for escapism.
