Review: What Happened to Coco - VB Furlong
Review: What Happened to Coco ? - VB Furlong - December 2021
First off this book drew me in with its amazing
floral cover as I just loved the composition of it all. The second was the
theme of YA Thriller and the third was that it was set in a boarding school
academy environment which of course is one of my favorite tropes to read about.
This book starts with Ella waking up and realizing that her friend Coco isn't
in her bed. This is strange but Ella thinks she is staying with her boyfriend
Harrison. Soon Ella and three of her friends will discover that this morning
their life will change forever when they discover that Coco is missing and no one
knows where she is. Everyone else thinks she will turn up but Ella, Conrad,
Harrison, and Bea know that something is truly wrong as Coco wouldn't leave
without her phone, etc. Each part in this book is told from one of the friend's
POVs as they each are hiding secrets and feel that these secrets had a part in
the disappearance of Coco or led to it. What happened though is much more
sinister and had nothing to do with the friends but other people in the school.
I have to admit, I did enjoy the mystery aspect and though it was a bit cliched
as I have read so many other boarding school stories with a similar theme and
turnout, it was a steady read. One of the things that frustrated me was the
fact that each of the foursomes had Coco on this pedestal of greatness when she
came across as a self-absorbed spoilt brat and someone who wanted to do things
her way or not at all. Overall, this was a slower-paced novel, it is
still a fun YA thriller to read if you love boarding school novels and
vanishing students.
