Review: The Roommate - Rosie Danan - September 2020

You know how sometimes covers can be deceiving, that was the way with this book. Picking up the book it looks like a very light and fluffy chick-lit novel especially with the very 'pink" cover and the cover. It did start that way as we meet Clara Wheaton who we learn that the "Wheaton" family especially the women like to make statements when and big grand gestures when they are in love and often their name is associated with scandals. Clara feeling lost on an impulse decides to go to LA with hopes of declaring her long-love to her best friend Everett. However, when she arrives she learns that Everett is leaving on a big adventure with his band and has rented out his room for the summer to a stranger he met on Craiglist. The roommate ends up being Josh Darling whom later Clara will learn about his profession and I will leave it at that as OMG this was a major twist I did not see coming. His profession will lead Clara to grow up and discovering herself and overcoming the name "Wheaton". This Summer, Clara did fall head over heels in love and finished the Summer on a romantic rollercoaster, just not with the guy she had expected.  I did like this story as in quite a few parts, I found a bit of myself in the heroine Clara as she will come to learn and grow this summer. The male hero Josh, on the other hand, frustrated me at points and it was like freaking hell, tell Clara what she means to you. You are supposed to be the male in the relationship, put on your big pants, and take charge.  I know that sounds probably a bit sexist, but I am all for feminism but also I do believe men should take charge and not be wimpy and cop-outs. I am now looking forward to reading the next book by this series which will feature Josh's female counterpart "Naomi aka Stu".
