Review: See How Small - Scott Blackwood
Review: See How Small - Scott Blackwood - January 2015
Ever read a book that still leaves you
confused? That was "See How Small" by Scott Blackwood. This month, I
joined an Instagram reading challenge to help clear the books off your print
bookshelves. This particular one I have no idea how I got it or how long it has
been sitting there. The back sounded intriguing, the aftermath of a tragedy
that involved three girls in a small community. What I got though was a bit of
a jumbled mess and confusion. The book is loosely based on the 1991 Yoghurt
Shop Murders in Austin, Texas. In this book, three girls are stripped and
murdered as the shop is also torched. Quite a gruesome ending to the girls'
lives, thank goodness the author doesn't go into too much detail about their
death. The book then follows on from the day after to the anniversaries of
their deaths. Police are still no closer in the present time to solving it than
they were the day it happened. Despite a couple of witnesses, no one knows
exactly what went down that fateful evening. I felt this book had a Lovely
Bones by Alice Sebold feel to it mixed with what you could expect from an
Indie/ Arty Film Festival-type movie. You know the ones that are a little
strange and don't really fit into a genre or theme. See How Small is not only
the aftermath of tragedy but also contains a bit of magical realism with the
girls as ghosts and watching their loved ones and the town.
