Review: Eye Spyclops - Libby Whittaker - April 2023

If you are looking for a gorgeous picture book, then this New Zealand-based picture book is for you. Written by NZ author Libby Whittaker, Eye Spyclops tells the story of Alfred and his mother who are Cyclops. Alfred suffers from blurry vision and it is diagnosed that he needs glasses. Most of the glasses that he comes across are made for two eyes and he gets disillusioned until he finds glasses that are perfect for him and made for his one eye.  The book also features a range of mythical creatures including dragons, fairies, and sea creatures. The idea for the story came to Libby when she was half asleep one night after a long shift at the hospital. She asked her partner to text her “Cyclops needs glasses”, which luckily still made sense the next day. Libby soon after had a draft story, which she shared with her flatmates who encouraged her to take it further, leading her to find a publisher. Libby’s quirky story is perfectly accompanied by Lily Uivel’s playful illustrations. Lily’s art is zany and whimsical with just the right amount of enchanting detail. This picture book is perfect for children aged 3 - 6 years old.
