Review: The Boyfriend Candidate - Ashley Winstead

Review: The Boyfriend Candidate - Book #2 Fool Me Once Series - Ashley Winstead - May 2023

You know that feeling when you find a book that you want to shout from the rooftops that everyone has to read, that was The Boyfriend Candidate by Ashley Winstead for me. I thought Fool Me Once was a good read, but this one topped that book and has now made it on my list of must-reads for 2023. The book starts with us meeting Alexis Stone - she is the younger sister of Lee Stone who was in Fool Me Once and does make several appearances in this book including the famous Captain Planet costume. In the Boyfriend Candidate, Alexis has discovered her longtime boyfriend Chris was cheating on her and so with the anniversary of him dumping her coming up, she decides to become Ruby Dangerfield and have a one-night adventurous stand. Of course, she didn't expect it to be potentially with a politician and to end with her picture in the paper. Logan Adams is running for senator and needs to present a wholesome image and now with Alexis and his picture on the news, he needs her to pretend to be his fake girlfriend. Of course, this is always easier said than done but as the book goes along, sparks fly of course between our two main characters who the author wrote perfectly as even for a politician - you can't help but stand by Logan. He just has this air of genuineness about him. I think the thing I loved most about this book was the fact that Alexis is a school librarian which as someone whose career this was, it spoke to me. The other thing I loved was how she used her leverage to talk about higher pay for support staff, book bans, and funding for libraries - all things that are very real issues and that I am passionate about myself.  If you get a chance this year to read The Boyfriend Candidate, then I highly recommend you do as you will not be disappointed.
