Review: Lula Dean's Little Library of Banned Books - Kirsten Miller - June 2024

As a former librarian and a voracious reader, I have always found the notion of "banned books" ridiculous as we should not be censoring what people read. People should have the free will to choose what to read or not to read. In the last few years, the notion of banning books has been running riot, especially in the USA, and every day when I read the number of books being banned or parents/organizations - I am thankful that despite being in such a small country, that we have the freedom to read whatever the hell we want too. This book caught my attention with the Little Library and the Banned Books. In this small town of Troy, Lula Dean is on a mission to ban books she thinks are inappropriate, and standing against her in this fight is Beverley Underwood - these two have been at each other's throats since their college days.  Lindsay Underwood is a lesbian and is not against sharing the books that people should be reading and causing a bit of mayhem. Along with her best friend Ronnie, the pair head over to Lula Dean's Library and switch the books around. Lindsay takes the dust jackets of Lula's books and places them on Banned Books. Soon the whole town is turned upside down as people are borrowing books from Lula Dean and getting a surprise once they are home. It has been empowering and life-changing for quite a few of the townspeople and this book shows the power of reading and how books can influence and help change readers' lives for the better.  Every year a massive list of books are added to the Banned Books List - most think they are older titles, but if you took a look at the list - I guarantee all of us readers have read at least a minimum of 5 books on the Banned Books List.  Lula Dean's Little Library of Banned Books by Kirsten Miller is one book that every reader should read especially more so in the world we are currently living in.
