Review: Debutantes - Cora Harrison- August 2012
As we all know how much I love covers , this book shows how much a cover can influence someone to buy a book as the fact that I love the 1920's era books as well helped. But, I just can't stop gushing over how amazing this cover art is from the flowers to the main picture of the girl who seems porcelain which in this era was all the rage. Debutantes by Cora Harrison in a slight way reminded me of the book Ballet Shoes by Noel Stretfeild in which the girls all wanted to become somebody but their family could not afford for them even to attend school. Debutantes focuses on a family of four daughters - We have Violet, Poppy, Daisy and Rose all named after flowers and each with a different aspiration - Violet wants to become a Debutante , Poppy - a jazz musician , Daisy - a film maker and Rose - a writer. When it comes to Violet's season , the four of them together try to make it work by putting in eaach of their talents to help Violet, including Daisy photographing Violet in order to send pictures to Violet's godmother to persuade her to sponsor Violet which they achieve. However, the main story lies when the girls are looking for dresses and comes across a suitcase titled "Elaine Carruthers" - Who was Elaine Carruthers ? . The girls also find a love letter in the suitcase and start to piece towards a mystery, but as we are about to discover the mystery might hit them close to home and one of the four sisters will be in for a startling shock as secrets of her past and who she really is are revealed ? .
For those who are wondering why though I loved this book, I have only given it 4 stars is because for me , the mystery aspect could have been played or focused on a bit more than what is done in the story which was a wee letdown for me as a reader other than that this book was amazing.
Find out more in Debutantes , a season where four girls got even more than they had ever bargained for.
