Review:Ships in the field - Susanne Gervay and Illus, by Anna Pignataro- February 2012
A lovely written and illustrated Children's Picture book that takes us to the heart of Australia , where many families have immigrated after the war. Ships in the field follows one family in particular , a little girl , her parents and her toy dog Brownie. Her Papa was a farmer and her mother a teacher before the war struck forcing them to uproot and move to another country. The story talks about the girl's family and their nationality differences including speech. Hence the title "Ships in the field" which we discover actually means "Sheeps in the field".
Author Susanne Gervay writes her stories with compassion and a realism and loves to address issues that REAL children and adults face in this world we live in , even today. Each of her stories has an underlining theme to it and Ships in the Field is "Everyone has a right to a nationality" stated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights".
