Review: The Secrets We Buried - Becca Day - September 2023

Traveling back on the bus from Auckland after a busy weekend, I was in the mood for a bit of a thriller and hopped on my Libby App and clicked on The Secrets We Buried by Becca Day. I hadn't heard of this author, but the book sounded interesting and I enjoyed it, so will be checking out her other thrillers. The book starts with a funeral and Frankie has returned to Millionaire's Row. Five years ago, after her friend died Frankie and her family moved away for a fresh start. She knows she shouldn't have come back, but Zara was once her best friend and her mum was someone Frankie respected. Frankie's visit though coincides with someone else - Juniper Rose. She is a YouTuber and True Crime aficionado and aims to solve the murder of Geneva Lee. Geneva made up the foursome friend circle that included Frankie, Zara, and Nadine. That night, Geneva died - the friends made a pact to never talk about it and act like they didn't see her lying on the beach. You see Geneva loved secrets and used them to blackmail people. Each of the friends had a dark secret that they never wanted to get out and with Geneva dead, their secrets would be taken to the grave. However, with the new videos - their dirty laundry and deepest darkest secrets are about to be revealed to the world as Juniper has an inside source. Who else knew their secrets besides Geneva? Geneva's husband Elliot was accused of murdering her and has just returned to tell his side of the story. If Elliot is innocent, then who killed Geneva and are they too back in Millionaire's Row? Find out in this fast-paced thriller by Becca Day with an ending that surprised me and will leave you going WTF OMG as well and aah as the book ends.
