The Last Full Measure

Review: The Last Full Measure - Ann Rinaldi - November 2010

As a voracious reader, I try to have a taste of everything available on my blog - I love the saying - something for everyone and that's my main philosophy behind how I choose my books and what to review on the site for you. I've never been one personally to go for books set in the time of the Confederate war, as being in New Zealand it is not really a big event, the only war we really commiserate in New Zealand is ANZAC which took part in Gallopili.
The Last Full measure follows th story of fourteen-year old Tacy who locks horns with her older brother David who as a child injured his leg which caused him to be ineligible for the war like her other brothers and father. As soldiers start to take over her town of Gettysburg , Tacy witnesses events that will change her life as the Rebs are taking all the black people away and for Tacy that includes her best friend Marvelous and her next door neighbour and surrogate sister Jeannie and her brother Sam. We read as the towns and people who have been friends for long periods become seperate as the war causes a line of division between the families of Whites and Blacks.
In the aftermath of this great and terrible battle, in which so many soldiers sacrifice their lives for their beliefs, David gives his last full measure...and leaves Tacy struggling to make sense out of it all.
