Review : The Chosen One - Carol Lynch Williams
Today's book for teens is one of those set in the Cult communities , a bit like the Mormons in Utah with the multiple wives.
Review: The Chosen One - Carol Lynch Williams - August 2010
Did you enjoy the book I am Not Esther and Sins of the Father by New Zealand author Fleur Beale ? For those who haven't read them, they are two books that are set within an cult church community where it is alright to have multiple wives etc.
In Carrol Lynch Williams book "The Chosen One" , it takes a different look on the community from the viewpoint of thirteen year old Kyra , she wishes to escape from the life of her community and their leader known only as "The Prophet". When it is announced that she has been "chosen" for marriage , it is the end of Kyra's freedom and worse of all she has been chosen to become the seventh bride of her Uncle Hyrum.
Kyra believes that it is because she is living in a world of sin - by chance she discovered a travelling Mobile Library and has been reading books any chance she can get in secret, she also has a secret boyfriend Joshua.
Repelled, she resists. She and Joshua are badly beaten and she is told that other young people have been killed for taking a similarly defiant stand. Kyra's loving father is powerless to help her and counsels her to accept her fate, but she cannot. The story ends in a high-speed chase with the Prophet's goons gunning for her as she improbably races toward freedom in the blood-spattered book mobile. Has the friendly driver been killed on her account? Is anyone looking for him? What retribution will be taken on her family and what kind of a life lies ahead for her? These unsettling questions are not addressed, but these omissions do not diminish the relief of her successful escape.
