All Janis Anthony wanted was a fresh start, away from her ex-husband - a horrible drunk who hurt her as who knew whether or not he would start on the children. With the help of her father, she moves her family to a small town called Mills River. It is here in Mills River, that Janis will meet her old lady in shining armour , Tillie whose house she has just purchased. Tillie's one last wish is that she die in the house that her and her husband built and soon becomes Janis's live-in help . Read as Tillie and Janis build a relationship in where Tillie becomes like Janis's surrogate mother . Daughter Roz has some secrets , living in a town that is segregated - Roz has a black friend called Mara and soon we discover that both girls have secrets about their parents . Mara's parents are in fact her grandparents and her sister Celia is in fact Mara's mum and the talk-back show's professor is Mara's birthdad. Roz is hiding the fact that her dad has found them , what will happen though when Roz's dad turns up at their home , can Tillie prevent tragedy from happening or will it result in somebody getting hurt?
