Review: The Fallen Blade - Act #1 of the Assassini - Jon Courtney Grimwood
I'm not normally one for reading Historical fiction , it either tends to be in the Christian genre or it has to be an awesome story to grab my attention as I'm a more contemporary reader. Today's story is a historical fiction with a tad of supernatural added to it, Today readers I bring you Act One of the Assassini - The Fallen Blade . This is book one of what is to be a trilogy.
Review: The Fallen Blade - Act #1 of the Assassini- Jon Courtney Grimwood- Jan 2011
Where to start with this book , first off how about the fact that I really enjoyed it, in fact for a historical novel I loved it and in fact going to purchase it for my personal collection. This novel is part of the Vampire assassin trilogy and is set in Venice, Italy in the year 1406-1407 , it tells the story of Marco Polo's great-great -great desecendant , a young girl called Giulette , this is the italian actual spelling of "juliet". The novel starts with her running away from an arranged marriage as the guy she is supposed to marry is an ex-torturer and also Giulette is only 12 - 13yrs old. The current ruler of Venice is her older cousin Duke Marco VI , but he seems like a bit of a simpleton in the novel so of course vying for his power to rule the throne is aunt and uncle's. However when Giluette ends up kidnapped , her kidnap status will trigger a war between the people . Is this what Giluette wanted to happen or will it reach the point that she will have to wander back into the arranged marriage agreement.
The other part of the story which begins to become the book's main storyline is that elsewhere the Duke's Chief assassin Atilo is on the lookout for an apprentice , someone who is fit enough and strong enough to follow in his footsteps and he has his eye on someone . Tycho is a 17yr old boy whose qualities resemble a Vampire. Can Atilo find him in time to train him to be his apprentice or will those who are hunting down Tycho reach him before Atilo can as we see in the prologue of the book.
This is an amazing mix of history, culture , mystery, intrigue and supernatural tendencies as we are faced with Vampires in the year 1400's.
A series that I recommend everyone should read and even if Vampires aren't really your thing, I guarantee if you give this a go - you will enjoy it.
The Fallen Blade is along the lines of The Midnight Guardian by Sarah Jane Stratford and Immanuel's Veins by Ted Dekker.
