Review: The Weight of Blood - Tiffany D. Jackson
Review: The Weight of Blood - Tiffany D. Jackson - September 2022
This book I have had this on my list for
a while now and I have read a few of her books and enjoyed them all. This one
also captured my attention from the cover as it had a Carrie feel to the book.
The Weight of Blood starts with us hearing a podcast about an incident that
happened in the small town and was compared to a massacre. The person who is
responsible for this was a girl named Maddie. The book then jumps back a few
months leading up to the incident with Maddie's truth of being half-black
exposed to the school and the bullying begins. The thing is Maddie looks white
and has never been allowed to acknowledge her black heritage. Instead, her
father punishes her to the closet where the walls are covered with thin, blonde
blue-eyed models. Her father's ideal female. During this time, Maddie learns
that she has abilities and can move things with her mind and starts to research
telekinesis - hence the Carrie reference. What happens though when the bullies
believe it is fine to play a prank on Maddie that backfires leaving a slew of
dead bodies in town and no sign of Maddie? Did Maddie die in the incident or
did she manage to escape and start a new life? Find out in The Weight of Blood
by Tiffany D. Jackson which also discusses racism in today's world and that in
some small southern town’s racism is still alive and well and due to traditions
- it is something that nobody blinks an eye to, why - because it's always been
this way.
Fans of Stephen King's Carrie will enjoy this YA twist on his classic novel.
