Our Voices: Issues Facing Black Women in America

Review: Our Voices - Issues Facing Black Women in America - Amanda Johnson - September 2009

Are you a Christian African-American living in America ? If so , then this book is designed especially for you as it discusses the issues that Black women face everyday in American society.
It discusses topics from Racism, Sexuality, Marriage, Singledom, Solo Parenting, The Church, Finances, Health, Spirituality and Walk with God and last but not least , the most important part of you - your Self-Esteem.
For me personally growing up in New Zealand, I have not had the opportunity to meet alot of Black women but I have always admired when Ive watched TV, read in a book , heard word of mouth about the way Black women handle themselves in Church, it is so darn inspiring as they get up there , sing in their amazing full-blown gospel voices, religiously worship god as one big happy family and what I love most is that when they are in the lord's house - they always look so free......Think about the role models we have in the Black women community, we have Whoopi Goldberg, Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin, Janet Jackson, Queen Latifah. All amazing strong women in my eyes. Have you ever seen the movie "The Secret Life of Bees'' , for a glimpse of the power of a Black women in Christ - check that film out, its truly amazing.
Each chapter of the book, is presented with a verse and a quote by an outstanding Black women role model and then goes on to talk about the issues in a language that we all understand. What I truly love about books like these is that they more often than not include ancedotes of everyday women, just like you and me.
At the end of each chapter, for further help and information - it also includes a list of references that were used in that chapter and a list of recommended readings if there was something that sparked your lil lightbulb in the chapter.
This is the perfect gift for all African-American women , whether you be a christian or not. It would also make a great study book to use in a bible study.
