Interview with Azuka Thomson, author of Dark Patches

Welcome Azuka,It is a pleasure to have you visit The Phantom Paragrapher. Thanks so much for having me.  I would like to get started with a few questions.

Q: Will you give us a background of the story?

Dark Patches is a social drama about the adverse and sometimes lethal effects of outside interference on a hitherto happy marriage. Right from the start, the story line was conceived complete with the beginning, the middle, and the ending. All the changes I made while writing were only with respect to details. A few of the events in this novel closely resemble some actual happenings. This is because the issues addressed were rampant for a long time, and they occurred with variations and consequences determined by the woman´s life circumstances. Although the events in this book are completely fictitious, they are designed to encourage people to be strong and follow their own ideals in their marital affairs.

Q: Will you share with us how you came up with the idea for this book?

I knew a couple of women who had been treated harshly in their marriages by their husband's families and so decided to write Dark Patches around that perennial problem. Dark Patches is therefore about the adverse and sometimes lethal effects that outside interference could have on a hither to happy marriage.

Q: It is said that authors write themselves into their characters. Is there any part of you in your characters and what they would be?

Some of my friends suspect that Ndidi, the heroine of the book, had a strong resemblance to me but by the end of the story they usually conclude that is not the case. However, the only character who really reminds me of myself is Ndidi's mother Philomena.

Q: What do you consider as the most frustrating side of becoming a published author and what has been the most rewarding?

A: Being very new and unknown, the most frustrating side of being a published author is the uncertainty and the agony of waiting for the reading public´s reaction. My most rewarding experience was seeing the book for the first time in print. It also gives me a lot of joy to read rave reviews by people I do not know and to hear my friends discuss the characters as if they were real people.

Q: What has been the best part about being published?

Considering that this first novel Dark Patches was released in November 2010, the best part of being published for me is still seeing my book in print. I have also derived immense satisfaction from some of the reviews that I have received.
