Those That Wake

Review: Those That Wake - Jesse Karp - March 2011

New York City's spirit has been crushed. People walk the streets with their heads down, withdrawing from each other and into the cold comfort of technology. A world where arts, culture and the bustling society was once alive has now turned dark and cold as people retreat into a world of gadgets.
Soon a group of people will end up band together to save the society of New York. Meet Mal, he gets a phone call from his brother Tommy needing help, he rushes to find him. His search for Tommy leads him to finding him kidnapped by a group of CIA Agents. It is here he meets Laura, whom after arriving home from a failed interview finds that her whole existence has been erased and nobody not even her friends and family knows who she is. The novel, then takes a weird twist as it starts to talk about a door and what can only be but not a parellel universe. Someone as they are about to discover,  has wiped the teens from the memories of every person they have ever known. Thrown together, Mal and Laura must find common ground as they attempt to reclaim their pasts.
A novel that as I was reading was in two minds about as it starts off great and then about halfway through the book, the story gets a tad weird. If you are into dystopian worlds and technology with a hint of Jason Bourne like action going on then this is the book for you.
