Review: Regrets Only - Kieran Scott - January 2023

I curled up with Regrets Only by Kieran Scott on my trusty Libby app this February, and what a treat it was to dive back into her world. I've been a longtime fan devouring her YA novels years ago and falling hard for everything she wrote as Kate Brian so when I discovered she'd penned a suburban mystery, I couldn't download it fast enough. It felt like reconnecting with an old friend.

Kieran Scott absolutely nails the chaos and cattiness of PTA or as they call it in this book PTB culture in this delightfully twisty tale. Our protagonist, Paige Lancaster, returns home to Connecticut nursing wounds from a Hollywood disaster. She's broke, humbled, and bunking with her mom and eight-year-old daughter Izzy.

Enter Ainsley Anderson: gorgeous, intimidating, and inconveniently married to John, Paige's high school sweetheart. At the annual Parents and Pinot fundraiser held at Ainsley's magazine-worthy mansion everything goes spectacularly wrong. Paige destroys a bathroom, gets caught in a compromising position with John, loses her purse, and overhears something she shouldn't. Then Ainsley winds up dead at the bottom of her driveway.

What I loved most was how Kieran Scott weaves together mystery and heart. Yes, there's embezzlement, bribery, adultery, and murder lurking beneath those perfectly manicured lawns, but there's also a single mom trying to rebuild her life and protect her daughter. Paige's determination to play detective despite only having written about them on TV is both endearing and entertaining. Her chemistry with John crackles on the page, even as you're wondering if he could be a killer.

The small-town Connecticut setting feels warm and familiar, even as its glossy veneer is exposed to reveal the secrets festering underneath. It's cozy mystery meets domestic thriller, with just enough humor to keep things from getting too dark.

Regrets Only was the perfect way to kick off my reading year - smart, engaging, and utterly unputdownable. If you're looking for a mystery that feels like gossip with your best friend over coffee, grab this one immediately.
