Review: Double Clutch - Liz Reinhardt

Looking for a fun light-hearted romance Teen/YA novel to read ?
Review: Double Clutch - Book #1 Breanna Blixen Series - Liz Reinhardt - September 2011
It's interesting ,watching the shape and direction of where Teen fiction is going to head as the last year - Supernatural was on the rise and now a hint of Dystopian is coming to 2012. However, in the mix of it all is that light-hearted romance that us girls love to devour and probably secretly guys do too - trying to figure out how to get a girl to like him :).
In Double Clutch , we meet Breanna Blixen she has just moved back from Denmark with her Mum and her husband- Breanna's stepdad Thorsten. After a year doing homeschool, it feels odd for Breanna to be in public school and around people her own age. It seems this year for Breanna will be the year of Love and decisions are to be made. On her first day of school , she meets Saxon - the brooding mysterious type , her partner in AP Government and Jake - he is in her Graphics design course at Tech School. As the novel goes along, we read as Saxon becomes quite pushy and in parts almost scarily creepy and reminds me of the character Joey from Shortland Street ( a NZ Medical Drama) , whereas Jake just seems like your nice guy. Read as Breanna is stuck in a love triangle and must choose who to be with and will find out that in a love triangle, you can only pick one guy and the other no matter how hard you try you will break their heart.
Who will Breanna go for ? The Dark and mysterious Saxon or the Artistic and creative Jake - who I imagine to myself looks a bit like Chris Z who played Joey Donner on the TV Series of "10 Things I Hate about You".
For a nice light-hearted romance , check out Double Clutch by Liz Reinhardt.

Waiting For Pops - John Riffice

Looking for a biographical novel to read over the New Year Break ?
Waiting for Pops
Synopsis: Waiting For Pops - John Philip Riffice -2010
This is a biographical novel that moves between Johnny's youth and more recent times. It is a painful recollection of a childhood blighted by his parent's relationship problems, loss and addiction. Viewed from the eyes of a child it is clearer to the reader what is really going on than to Johnny himself, and having a young narrator probably makes the story more painful and poignant. Before his father dies and his sister is diagnosed their life seems happy and loving, despite the long hours and little money. This makes the contrast with what happens later even more stark. Johnny is brought up in a neighbourhood where gossip is rife and he is desperate to keep his mum's secret, so is left to deal with the results of her drinking alone.
It covers what Johnny's teenage years were like growing up in 1950s Chicago which involve dealing with many of the rites of passage familiar to all boys, like first dates and kisses. His story though is also one of a boy growing into a man having to deal with his father's death, his mother's alcholism and his sister's admission to a sanatorium as they struggle to cope with her autism. He grows up with memories of wonderful times with his father while being angry with his mother, believing she is the root of all their problems. As a grown man he comes to realise things weren't what they appeared and has to reappraise his view of his parents.

Love is Strong as Death - Rick and Nancy Fleeter

Synopsis : Love is Strong as Death - Rick and Nancy Fleeter - January 2011
"A moving tribute to a remarkable woman-by an equally remarkable man. This perspective into Rick and Nancy's struggle together and his acceptance of her death gives us a fresh view into ourselves."
Dr. Steve Glazer, congregational rabbi and hospice chaplain
Our modern lives are managed for us by experts in birthing, in exercise, in nutrition, in education, in choosing a mate, in distribution of news, entertainment, government and groceries. Nancy and I were not experts on any of these things, much less on facing life's most difficult passage-death.
This book is our experience, two innocent novices, in dying, death and rebuilding one life where once there had been two. It offers no advice, only a window into this most personal, and at the same time universal, of human experiences.

Review: Matilda is Missing - Caroline Overington

When I saw this new release by Caroline Overington , I knew I just had to read it as I had read her book "Ghost Child" and adored that book :) -one of my favourite reads.
Are you on the lookout for a new Australian Author to read as we snuggle close to the upcoming Australia Day next month on the 26th January.
Review: Matilda is Missing - Caroline Overington - October 2011
Reading the blurb of the book compared to the book itself will prepare you for only half of the story , a snippet that doesn't get revealed till halfway through the novel. From the title and the synopsis , I had a whole different view of what the novel would be like and about and as I turned the first page , I would be in for a shock. The novel starts not with Gary, Softie and Matilda but in fact with an entirely different family named "the Harrisons". Husband and Wife , Pat and Barry Harrison. The story begins with a struggle of their own , their youngest son Brian is getting married to a bartender named Nerida who is a single mother with a 4yr old son named Ethan. Pat, from the beginning has shown nothing but dislike for Nerida and it will soon come to bite her own the bum as Nerida falls pregnant not once but twice with Brian's children. Soon Pat becomes a doting grandmother to Ethan, Jett and Baxter . However, the happiness will be shortlived as Nerida is caught cheating on Brian and she is so mad at Brian for leaving her , that she refuses to let Pat see her grandchildren. What becomes as a Grandmother wanting to spend time with her grandchildren, will hit National news when Pat decides to go for the extreme. Meanwhile Barry, stuck in the middle visits an old Family Court Judge friend of his Frank who three weeks later passes and leaves Barry , a court case and files - Monaghan vs Hartshon . This case was about Gary, Softie and the little girl named Matilda and what started as a loving family ended up in a deadly, costly and ugly court battle over two year old Matilda. As the case goes along, we see that it soon becomes all about Gary and Softie rather than the most important thing Matilda. As we read Pat and Barry discovering more about the case, we start to see similarities and will discover the lengths a family or someone who we love and they love us will go to save one another . Something interesting that I picked up about the Cases is that and I guess it relates in reality too , is that most custody cases end up being about what the parents want and need, rather than the childs even though they are the most important thing in the world and the battle is for their safety and welfare.
Another great read written by Caroline Overington :) and I look forward to her next novel "I Came to Say Goodbye".

Review: Kill Alex Cross - James Patterson

Are you a fan of James Pattersom's novels ? Adore his Alex Cross Series , or are you like me and make a habit to read ALL of James Patterson's released books ?
Get ready for the latest in the Alex Cross Series ...............

Review: Kill Alex Cross - Book #18 Alex Cross Series - James Patterson- September 2011
Can you say WOW ? , I did as I opened up to begin Kill Alex Cross by James Patterson, especially when I discovered that this is the 18th book in the Alex Cross Series. Thinking about this brought back a conversation I had with a book lover's group "Bookaholics Anonymous" on Facebook about long-running series - the one in question was Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum as that's just made it's way to it's 18th book. Some people wrote that they couldn't get enough, while others said as they neared the 10th, 13th book- they stopped as they had just plainly had enough of that character. I found that with The Dresden Files , I read all the way to Book #7 and then had to stop for a while as that was enough dosage of Harry. Whereas for me , I ADORE Alex Cross and James Patterson as an author and I can't get enough of Alex as each book is written in the same fashion, thrilling and fast paced.
In Kill Alex Cross , we see a mixture of events occur from a kidnapping of the president's children - which of course reminds Washington and Alex Cross of the Gary Soljei case - "Along Came a Spider" and a terriost group has arrived in America calling themselves "The Family". Unlike his previous Alex Cross novels, we do read alot of bloodshed and so many people are dying and being killed. I lost count about halfway through. The Kidnapper as we discover likes to record himself and again refers himself to being like Gary and where Gary failed - the new kidnapper would love to "Kill Alex Cross". Can Alex find the children and solve the crime before he is the one that ends up dead ? Is this the last book in the Alex Cross series ?
And we read as a new addition is added to the Cross family , when Nana Cross ends up getting mugged and attacked -Bree angry sets out to find the culprit and instead finds the culprit as a 13yr old homeless girl named Ava. Nana Cross insists Alex to take her under their wing , will Alex be keen with the idea or will he find himself outnumbered ?
Read more in Book #18 Kill Alex Cross - another James Patterson novel that won't leave you disappointed.
